What to verify before choosing a project partner in Thailand.

A practical evidence checklist for technology and industrial companies comparing distributors, service partners and project opportunities.

Separate the project from the opportunity for you

A real project can still be a poor sales opportunity. The relevant package may already be awarded, the specification may exclude your product, or the customer may have no budget for the service you offer. Begin by naming the decision: whether to pursue a particular customer, appoint a distributor or invest time in a proposed partnership.

Write down what would change that decision. If local maintenance coverage is essential, evidence about maintenance should receive more attention than a partner’s general growth presentation.

Use official discovery routes without mistaking them for verification

Thailand’s Board of Investment publishes business-opportunity resources across industrial sectors. Such resources can help identify a market or possible route. They do not establish that a named company has your required capacity, that a project has reached a milestone, or that you have permission to act on anyone’s behalf.

Build a project record you can check

  • Identity: the legal entity, site, owner, operator and exact phase under discussion.
  • Status: which milestones are complete, which are planned and which depend on something else.
  • Buying responsibility: the customer, package owner, specification adviser and person authorised to choose a supplier.
  • Commercial timing: when the decision will be made, whether the budget exists and whether a tender or existing agreement constrains access.
  • Your role: the work you could perform and the evidence that the customer actually needs it.

Give each material statement a dated source. Keep the company’s claim separate from the document or firsthand account that supports it.

Ask for the missing evidence precisely

If an announcement says a power-supply agreement has been signed, that establishes an agreement. It does not by itself establish that the permanent site connection is live or that supporting systems have completed testing.

Ask the project team which site and phase the statement concerns, which milestones are complete, and what dated documents establish them. Where confidentiality prevents document sharing, ask whether a redacted document or confirmation from the responsible utility or engineer is possible. A qualified engineer should assess technical interpretations.

If evidence is not supplied, record what you requested and the reporting cutoff. Say that the milestone could not be verified. Do not turn missing evidence into a claim that the work is unfinished.

Test a partner against the work, not a reputation score

For a distributor or service partner, ask what work it performs itself and what it subcontracts. Request relevant completed assignments, the exact role, service locations and references. Discuss spare parts, trained staff, warranty responsibilities and the practical response to a failure.

For example, a firm may have installed a system successfully in one location but rely on another company for maintenance elsewhere. That is an illustrative possibility, not an allegation about a named company. The useful question is who will carry the responsibility under your proposed arrangement.

Use meetings to resolve specific questions

Before travelling, list the uncertainties each meeting could resolve. Ask to meet the person responsible for delivery and agree what may be observed or discussed. Bangkok can be a convenient meeting base, but the factory or project may be elsewhere. Price the actual itinerary and allow for access restrictions.

After the meetings, compare the evidence with your original decision criteria. Explain what changed, what remains unknown and whether the next step should be a paid pilot, further checking, negotiation or no action.

Agree the commercial boundaries

A referral commission can affect incentives. Ask who pays it, what triggers payment and whether it changes the price or comparison you receive. Engineering inspection, legal advice and regulated financial work need the appropriate professionals; a commercial adviser’s report does not replace them.

Signal Archipelago can conduct a remote Thailand project or partner assessment, followed by separately scoped, client-funded meetings where they would answer a useful question.
